Welcome to the 2025–2026 school year at MS 577! Whether you're joining us for the first time or returning for another exciting chapter, we are truly thrilled to have you as part of our community. At MS 577, our mission is simple yet powerful: to ensure that every child feels supported, challenged, and inspired every step of the way. We hope that through your child's growth, you too will feel the magic that fills our classrooms.

Inside this handbook, you’ll find the policies, practices, and values that have made MS 577 a pillar of excellence in District 14 for over 20 years. What sets us apart is our commitment to creating an inclusive, dynamic environment where dedicated educators, curious learners, and engaged families work hand-in-hand to make learning joyful and meaningful.

Middle school is a transformative time, and we deeply value our collaboration with you, our families. Together, we will prepare your child not only for academic success in high school and college, but for a fulfilling, purpose-driven life beyond the classroom. At MS 577, we hold ourselves to the highest standards because we believe in the limitless potential of every student.

 Our curriculum is grounded in the NYS Next Generation Standards, ensuring each student receives a well-rounded, rigorous education. Our teachers go above and beyond to bring these standards to life—empowering students with voice, confidence, and critical thinking. One shining example is our SOAPBOX program in social studies, where students craft and deliver powerful speeches that foster civic awareness and personal agency.

 Leadership and self-reflection are at the heart of our academic culture. Students learn to evaluate their work and support one another with constructive feedback—skills that build independence and empathy. Through writing—whether in journals, essays, or research projects—our students grow into clear, confident communicators.

Our curriculum offers a rich blend of core subjects and exciting electives: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Arts, Social Studies, Physical Education, Computer Science, Foreign Language, Advisory, and Club Choices. And through our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, students explore friendship, empathy, and collaboration—essential life skills that we nurture just as intentionally as academics.

This year, we’re proud to offer Algebra 1, Living Environment (Biology), and Spanish Proficiency to qualified 8th graders, giving them a head start on high school achievement. Our 6th and 7th graders will continue building a strong academic foundation through carefully aligned curriculum pathways, ensuring continuity and readiness at every level.

Beyond the classroom, students can immerse themselves in enriching residencies and extracurriculars that expand their creativity and cultural awareness. From American Ballroom Dancing Classrooms and Brooklyn Horticulturists to We Beat The Streets Wrestling, Lego Challenge, and WASAD Architectural & Design Team, there's truly something for every interest.
